Guide
Using a dollar card in Europe
When a terminal offers to convert a euro purchase into dollars, pause and compare what is being offered before accepting.
Understand the currency choice
A merchant terminal or ATM may offer to charge your card in USD instead of EUR. That convenience uses a conversion selected at the point of sale; declining it usually leaves conversion to your card issuer, subject to your issuer’s terms.
Check your card terms
Before travelling, review foreign-transaction fees, ATM fees, issuer exchange-rate rules, daily limits, and whether withdrawals attract interest.
Keep the evidence
Retain the receipt and check the posted amount in your card account. If the currency choice or amount differs from what you accepted, contact the card issuer using its official support channel.
- Read the amount and currency before confirming.
- Do not rely only on a “guaranteed rate” label.
- Use the reference converter as context, not as a transaction promise.
