Reference rate vs bank exchange rate
Two rates can be valid for different purposes. The important step is knowing which rate you are looking at and what costs surround it.
Reference rate
A reference rate is a benchmark published from institutional market data. It helps compare values consistently, but it is not necessarily available to a retail customer for an immediate transaction.
Provider rate
A bank, card network, wallet, or cash exchange chooses the rate used in its service. The rate can include a commercial margin, while other fees may appear separately.
A fair comparison
Calculate the reference outcome, then compare it with the actual amount delivered. The difference captures the combined impact of the rate and the included fees, though taxes or later intermediary charges can still apply.
